Our ‘Piecycles’ play starring role in Tour de Yorkshire

We are proud to be among some of Yorkshire’s finest food and drink producers showcased to the world’s media during the Tour de Yorkshire today at Conisbrough Castle, where we unveiled our special ‘Piecycles’

Journalists from across the world will descend on Yorkshire for the international cycle race, which begins in Beverley on Friday 29th April with the finale in Scarborough on Sunday 1st May.

Media centres will be in place at all the finishes in Settle, Doncaster and Scarborough where journalists can keep up with all the racing action, file copy and feast on delicacies from some of Yorkshire’s best loved food and drink companies.

To celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire riding into the region we have provided special ‘Pie-cycles’ to the Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster.

The 450g handcrafted pork pies are made to our family-recipe and sandwich delicious chicken breast with diced dried apricots and cranberry in layers of British Red Tractor pork meat baked in rich hot water crust pastry and finished off with a bicycle design top.

Our showpiece Pie-cycle handcrafted by Roger Topping will also be on display at the media centre in Doncaster.

Roger Topping said:

“It’s fantastic news that the Tour is coming into town and we are delighted to get behind the iconic bike race with our special cycle-themed pork pies.  The region boasts an array of award winning local food producers so visiting media will get to feed on a real Yorkshire feast.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said:

“It is well known that Yorkshire is home to some of the finest food and drink producers in the country, and many of these will be showcased at the media centres during the Tour de Yorkshire.

“I am sure the journalists coming from far and wide to cover the race will be extremely impressed with the spread laid on for them.

“I would like to thank all companies who have contributed for their generosity and help in making the Tour de Yorkshire a success.”

THE Queen’s 90th birthday will be marked with pomp, pageantry and…. a posh pie from Toppings!

Roger Topping has baked a special ‘Queen’s Pie’ for Her Majesty The Queen and personally delivered it to the Royal Chef at Windsor Castle ahead of the monarch’s actual birthday (21 April).

Developed from an original recipe by Maggie who took inspiration from Victorian pies, the 2.2kg Queen’s Pie is a delicious 3-layer combination of pork meat and game.

Maggie’s recipe teams British Red Tractor pork meat with a double layer of duck breast and guinea fowl breast marinated in mandarin orange segments, juice and orange curd and a layer of mandarin orange, Cointreau and orange juice stuffing, topped off with mandarin orange segments.

Roger Topping commented :

“We decided to celebrate our monarch’s special birthday by baking a pie to an original recipe created by my wife, Maggie. We were delighted to be given permission to deliver it to The Queen’s Chef for her to enjoy.”

We’re no strangers to Royal attention, when three generations of our family welcomed The Princess Royal to the new bakery in 2008 during a tour of Doncaster. As part of her visit, The Princess Royal tasted our award winning pies and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Mr Andrew Coombe said:

“I know that the Princess Royal very much enjoyed visiting Toppings pies and it pleases me greatly that the company has carried on its proud association by producing the commemorative offering. It is a touching gesture that has been graciously received by Her Majesty’s chef.”

Limited Edition versions of the Queen’s Pie will go on sale for the general public at the Topping Pie outlets in Doncaster market and the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, as well as at Selfridges, Oxford Street and Fenwicks Food Hall in Newcastle.

The Queen marks her milestone birthday after becoming Britain’s longest serving monarch, surpassing her great great grandmother Queen Victoria last year.

Events to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday include The Patron’s Lunch, a mass street party held on The Mall for 10,000 guests on Sunday 12 June 2016.
