Who Ate All the Pies this Christmas? – the Germans

German shoppers will be encouraged to ditch sauerkraut and stollen bread this Christmas for the great British pie thanks to The Topping Pie Company of Doncaster. BBC One’s primetime magazine programme, The One Show, has invited the Yorkshire company to visit a traditional German Christmas market in December to fly the flag for British produce in its “Food Ambassadors” project
Managing director of The Topping Pie Company, Roger Topping, has been chosen from many national food producers to persuade German shoppers at the Celle Christkindle Market to sample and buy typically British Christmas foods – and his famous speciality apricot and poultry pie is on the menu, alongside traditional Figgy Christmas Puds from Seriously Good Food Ltd in Buckinghamshire.
The aim of the film, which will be presented by Carol Thatcher, is to promote British food and show how passionate we Brits can be about our local produce. Roger Topping is famous for his traditional and speciality pies which have won more than 20 awards in recent years and was the ideal candidate to convert German shoppers to try a traditionally and typically British Christmas must-have.
Celle is the former residence of George I – king of Hanover and Great Britain - and hosts one of the most picturesque, yet extravagant Christmas markets in Germany, attracting a massive 70,000 visitors per weekend from all over Germany.
Commenting on his participation in the programme, Roger Topping said: “I am absolutely delighted and proud to be chosen to fly out to Germany to be an ambassador for British food and to introduce our pies to German shoppers. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to both dispel the myth that British food is bad and to promote our award-winning, homemade pies in Europe. I can’t wait to see the reaction of shoppers. I am sure they will really enjoy the taste, flavour and texture of our products, which will go down well with a glass of Gluhwein or two!&rdquo
In 1989 Roger and Maggie Topping took over the butchery business in Doncaster Market from Roger’s father Bill and it was Maggie’s talent for home baking that changed the landscape of the business. In 1991 Maggie started making traditional home made pies using her own recipes and totally natural ingredients to sell in the company’s shop. The Topping Pie Company has now transformed from a small family butchers to a multi-award winning speciality pie business, employing 50 people
The ethos of the business continues to be that of making pies and quiches using only the very best ingredients with no additives or chemicals. Current customers include EH Booths, United Co-op stores; Fenwick’s of Newcastle, Dobbies Garden Centres, ASDA and P&O Shipping Lines. The company is currently in talks with major retailers to stock its premium pies.
The One Show is hosted by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, and is broadcast every weeknight between 7 – 7.30pm on BBC One.
